Freddy Fender Diagnosed With Hepatitis
He is undergoing a series of dialysis treatments in Corpus Christi, Texas, and is being evaluated for a liver transplant.
Fender will continue to perform on weekends and select bookings, according to his publicist, Kirt Webster.
“Freddy has overcome many hurdles in his career and we are hopeful that a donor organ will be located. We ask that all friends, fans, and family keep Freddy in their prayers,” Webster said.
Hepatitis C is a viral infection of the liver. When the infection continues for six or more months, it is known as chronic hepatitis C, which can cause fatigue and impair liver function. Those with chronic hepatitis C have an increased risk of developing cirrhosis or liver cancer.
In the last decade, Fender earned a new generation of fans with the Texas Tornados but his musical legacy dates back to the ‘50s.
One of only a handful of successful Hispanic country singers, Fender has received an Academy of Country Music award, Country Music Association award, and two Grammy awards during his lengthy career.
