Michael Stipe, Pete Buck and Mike Mills will play at the 40,000-capacity Campo de Polo in Buenos Aires on January 17, four days after their Rio performance. They haven’t revealed who will serve as drummer for the shows or if additional musicians will join them.

Original drummer Bill Berry left the band in 1997 after experiencing a brain aneurism on stage during R.E.M.’s 1995 European tour.

The Rock In Rio festival runs from January 12-14 and 18-21, with Guns N’ Roses, Deftones, Papa Roach, Britney Spears, Dave Matthews Band, Sting, Sheryl Crow, ‘N Sync, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Beck among the international touring acts confirmed in addition to R.E.M.

The band has been holed up in a Miami recording studio working on their first album since 1998’s Up. The record, expected to hit shelves in spring 2001, will be their 12th studio release.
