SuperJam is part of the Jazzfest Concert Series in New Orleans, and this year the event matches Carter Beauford, John Medeski, Meshell Ndegéocello, Joshua Redman, and Marc Ribot in concert May 6 at the Saenger Theatre.

Last year’s SuperJam became a landmark event, with a record-breaking 13-minute sellout of the 2,700-seat venue.

Beauford’s name may not be instantly recognizable, but as the drummer for the Dave Matthews Band, he’s played in front of some of the largest audiences in the world. His work with DMB has caught the ears of Carlos Santana, Victor Wooton, and John Popper – who have all utilized his talent for their own records.

Medeski (Medeski, Martin and Wood) and his Hammond B3 organ are SuperJam veterans. He’s known for his penchant for vintage keyboards as well as his technical musicianship, a combo that results in an experimental sound bridging jazz and hip-hop.

Ndegéocello burst on the scene in 1994 with Plantation Lullabies, and is a Lilith Fair veteran. The singer/songwriter/bassist has formed a new band called The and is currently touring.

Saxophonist Redman is one of the brightest of the new stars in jazz. A winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute’s saxophone competition, the Berkeley, Calif.-born artist has recorded seven albums including his latest, Passage of Time.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is a noted member of New York City’s avant-garde scene, particularly as a member of the Lounge Lizards. He has recorded with Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and others. Currently, he’s performing with his new group, Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos.

The Jazzfest brings a wide variety of jazz, rock, world music and funk to New Orleans, utilizing the most venerated theaters, clubs and bars around the city.
