Two shows in Japan at the Summer Sonic 2002 fest follow Múm’s Stateside tour in mid-August.

Much like their Icelandic counterparts Sigur Rós, Múm envelop a sound that evokes their country’s landscape and a sort of innocence. Warm melodies combine with electronic beats to produce an almost naive feeling, as indicated in songs like “I Am 9 Today.”

Although they’ve garnered comparisons to Belle & Sebastian, Plone, and Boards Of Canada, Múm are distinctly their own group with their own sound. All four members are instrumentally talented, playing the standard guitar, bass, and keys alongside the cello, accordion, melodica, and glockenspiel, among others.

Múm’s 1999 debut Yesterday Was Dramatic. Today Is OK helped win them the best newcomer award at the Icelandic Music Awards and things have only looked up from there. They just released their second album, Finally We Are No One, to rave critical reviews.
