Luckenbach Picnic Sans Willie

Residents of Luckenbach, Texas, suffered an even crueler fate July 2 when nearly half of the tiny town was swept away in a flood when the banks of the South Grape Creek burst. As a result, the Fourth of July Picnic – a yearly highlight for the town’s residents – will not be taking place after all.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that the Willie Nelson semi-annual Fourth of July Picnic would be taking place without the Redheaded Stranger this year. At the time of the announcement, the picnic was going ahead with local musicians instead of the usual star-studded show, which has featured artists like Susan Tedeschi, Joe Ely, Ray Price and Ray Wylie Hubbard along with Willie Nelson.

The picnic started way back in 1972 in Dripping Springs, Texas, as an opportunity for artists to come together and celebrate the day. From 1995-1999, the event was held in Luckenbach. In 2000, the last picnic, the event was moved to Austin.
