Redefining Kool
While he’s really never stopped touring, it’s been some time since Kool Keith has been in the headlines. He infamously made news with his 1995 debut, Earth People, made under the name Dr. Octagon. The doctor was a skewed gynecologist character who spat rhymes to beats by DJ Q-Bert, Dan The Automator and DJ Shadow.
However, another alter-ego rose up and killed Dr. Octagon in 1999 when Dr. Dooom released First Come, First Served. Got that? These two characters are just a few of the many personas and projects roaming Kool Keith’s head.
“I’ve got stuff for soundtracks. I’ve got Keith… Straight Up Keith. Then Keith Part 2: The Return Of Keith; The Return Of Black Elvis 2; The Awakening – Keith; Dr. Octagon, Black Elvis And Dr. Dooom; Jackie Jasper And Keith Part 1; Dr. Dooom Part 2; Matthew Part 2; Sex Style Part 2 and 3; all going down – endless,” Kool Keith told VH1 this summer.
And to think he was a one-time mental patient at Bellevue.
Aside from the many solo albums up his sleeve, Kool Keith is releasing a group project under the name KHM, as well as a second Dr. Octagon album.
Curiously, one of Keith’s most recent tours was with rock en EspaƱol artists. Last year, he was aboard the Watcha tour which featured Juanes, Los Amigos Invisibles, La Ley and others. That year he was also on the Warped Tour and had a few solo gigs of his own.
