Do The Reggae
They’re currently toasting their way across the country with dates running through May 7-8, when they have two shows scheduled at San Francisco’s newest venue, The Independent (formerly Justice League). More Northern California dates are to be confirmed.
Having first emerged during the ska heyday of the early ’60s, Toots & The Maytals were instrumental in the creation and development of reggae, and are often said to have coined the genre’s name with their 1968 single “Do The Reggay.”
Their new record, True Love, features guest appearances from a host of living legends, including fellow reggae veterans Bunny Wailer, Ken Boothe and Marcia Griffiths as well as Keith Richards, The Roots, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, No Doubt, Ryan Adams, Trey Anastasio and more.
Regarding Toots, Adams remarked, “That guy oozes soul … thick as hell like molasses.”
“It was a dream of mine to get to record with him,” added Raitt. “What a thrill to get to sing with him and his remarkable band.”
