The worker, a 44-year-old Broward County resident whose identity was not immediately released, fell about 50 feet from a ladder and landed on the side of the stage at the James L. Knight Center, said Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll. The worker was pronounced dead at Ryder Trauma Center.

“They worked frantically to try to revive him,” Carroll said.

Miami police Sgt. Christine Acuna said there was no sign of criminal activity related to the incident, which was still under investigation.

Stereophonics, the opening act for Bowie’s show, had finished their set a few minutes before the incident. The worker was apparently trying to adjust lighting in preparation for Bowie’s performance, which attracted a sold-out crowd of about 4,600, Carroll said.

Bowie was “deeply saddened” by the accident, according to a press release from his touring company, Clear Channel Entertainment.

Bowie’s next scheduled tour stop is Saturday in Atlanta.
