The name might be slang for lesbian sex act, but the New York City-based quintet are neither lesbians nor sisters – though multi-instrumentalist Babydaddy once told the Boston Globe that they were really just a few gay men and a drag queen trapped in a woman’s body.

Sporting monikers like Paddy Boom, Ana Matronic, Del Marquis, Babydaddy and Jake Shears, the group sprang from the cabarets and art clubs of Manhattan and recently have taken Europe by storm, hitting the festival circuit in all their boa-and-sequined glory.

They’ve been accused of heresy for their Georgio Moroder-esque cover of Pink Floyd’s iconic “Comfortably Numb,” but count Roger Waters and David Gilmour among their biggest fans.

They’ve also earned a mentor in Elton John – who certainly knows fine glam when he sees it and invited the group to be a rare opening act on some shows this year.

Now, the Scissor Sisters are planning their American homecoming, kicking off at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., on September 9 and swinging through Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Seattle San Francisco and San Diego before winding down some three weeks later at The Avalon in Hollywood.

Whether it’s the Warhol imagery or the electronic power pop of their radio-friendly single, “Take Your Mama,” prepare to be transported to 1974 – and to have some kitschy fun in spite of your 21st Century self.
