BofA Gives Up FleetCenter Naming Rights

Boston’s FleetCenter may get a new name yet, but it won’t be the BofA Center.

Bank of America Corp. has agreed to give up naming rights to the Beantown venue despite never actually getting its own name on the building.

Bank of America acquired FleetBoston Financial Corp. last spring for $48 billion and had reportedly been negotiating for months to get out of the FleetCenter contract.

The Boston Globe reported the Charlotte, N.C.-based banking giant would pay between $2 million and $3 million to get out of the final six years of the 15-year, $30 million naming rights deal between FleetBoston Financial and venue owner Delaware North.

The agreement means Delaware North can now offer the naming rights to other companies.
