On it, Lynne proved to the world that she is a formidable talent – songwriter included – and the press told Sheryl Crow to start looking over her shoulder.

Then there came a Bob Dylan/Self Portrait moment. Lynne returned with an album called Love, Shelby that ventured into commercial pop and included a pop starlet pose on the cover. The quality of the record is certainly a decision each listener has to make, but most critics were very disappointed in the new image and sound. The momentum waned.

Lynne is dropping Suit Yourself today, May 23, and she’s back in good graces.

Blender gives it four out of five stars and says it’s the best thing she’s done since the Grammy award. Mixing homemade demo tracks and recorded false-starts, the album is a great, stylish treat and the title track “mixes Dusty Springfield soul, catchy ‘70s AM radio and a blunt, sexy, unsentimental vision of pop-country.”

We know she never really went away, but let’s welcome her back just the same. Lynne shows her new stuff in Denver July 6th and tours through mid-August, ending in Salt Lake City on the 18th. Los Lonely Boys get to play with her at the Konocti Harbor Resort & Spa in Kelseyville, Calif., August 6.
