Man Stabbed After Jay-Z Gig

New York City police are investigating the stabbing of a man at a midtown nightclub May 24th shortly after rapper Jay-Z made an appearance.

Edwin Lake, 30, was knifed in the groin during a fight at Club Speed at about 3 a.m. He was taken to a nearby hospital and was listed in critical condition, according to the New York Post.

Police said the fracas wasn’t connected to Jay-Z, but probably started when one person bumped into another.

A witness told officers that a heckler had squirted the artist and others with water, and was chanting “G-Unit” during Jay-Z’s two-song set — a reference to rapper 50 Cent‘s crew that may have irritated a few people. Club officials asked patrons to leave following Jay-Z’s exit, the paper said.

Police were called to the scene when the fight broke out. Two men were arrested after they were allegedly seen trying to stash bloody clothing.

A Jay-Z spokeswoman told the Post that the artist-turned-record exec had stopped by the club to see rap protégé Memphis Bleek, and both men left long before the fight started.

Bleek’s album recently debuted at No. 11 on Nielsen SoundScan.
