Left Eye’s Mom Sues Automaker

Wanda Lopes-Colemon, mother of late rapper Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, is suing Mitsubishi and its U.S. subsidiary, claiming the company ignored warnings that its SUV was prone to roll over.

Lopes, who was a member of Grammy-winning trio TLC, was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero when she was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Honduras three years ago. Police said at the time that Lopes may have been speeding.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, claims the singer was driving at a normal speed when she swerved and the vehicle flipped over. She was killed instantly; eight other people in the vehicle survived.

The complaint alleges Mitsubishi officials knew the SUV was given a “not acceptable” safety rating by Consumer Reports and hid the details from the public.

Mitsubishi officials deny any wrongdoing in the case.
