Greenbriar Boys Singer Dies

John Herald, 65, a noted bluegrass musician who recorded with Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, died at his home in West Hurley, N.Y., July 19th.

A medical examiner has not ruled on the cause of death but state police said it appears to be suicide, according to The New York Times.

Herald was perhaps best known as guitarist and lead vocalist for the Greenbriar Boys, who were at the forefront of New York’s Greenwich Village folk scene in the early ’60s.

The band toured with Joan Baez, and Herald’s song “Stewball” was recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary.

The musician reportedly performed solo and with the John Herald band through the ’70s. He also played with the Woodstock Mountain Revue.

Herald released Roll On John in 2000 and was working on an album prior to his death.
