Letterman Rescues Zombies

David Letterman came to the rescue of The Zombies after the group was stranded in Canada en route to their performance at a New York City benefit.

The band was set to play with the reunited Peter & Gordon and several other ’60s acts at the August 2nd concert, a benefit for Dave Clark Five frontman Mike Smith, who was paralyzed after a 2003 accident.

However, The Zombies found their flight from Winnipeg to Toronto grounded after the near-disastrous Air France crash the same day, according to reports.

Letterman band leader Paul Shaffer, organizer and host of the concert, heard about the group’s predicament and called his boss. Letterman promptly sent his own jet to Hamilton to pick up the band, reports said.

The Zombies arrived at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill a couple of hours late but still pulled off their headlining set.

“He saved the day,” Zombies agent Robert Rowland of Talent Consultants International told Canadian Press. “The doors opened at 6:00, the show was supposed to start at 7:30, but I don’t think the show started until 8:45 p.m. They kept stalling and stalling to let the guys get there.”
