NBC Idol?

NBC is following “American Idol” into the world of televised singing competitions with a show based on the “Eurovision Song Contest” that helped launch such acts as Abba and Celine Dion into stardom.

The currently unnamed American version will combine online and broadcast elements, NBC officials said. The show will include an online competition to find singers from each state, with the winners advancing to the viewer-judged TV competitions. The winner will receive a recording contract.

Network officials said the show will feature amateurs and professionals in solo and group acts. No air date for the series has been announced and further details are forthcoming.
