Universal Music Splits Motown

Universal Music Group plans to split one of its largest divisions in two, according to Universal execs.

Universal Motown Group will become Universal Republic and Universal Motown, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Motown Group is currently headed by Monte Lipman and Sylvia Rhone.

Lipman will take over Universal Republic, and Rhone will helm Universal Motown.

UMG plans to hire as many as 30 new employees for the new labels.
