Grant Lee’s Eighties
Grant Lee Phillips is paying tribute to the bands that help form his musical identity with a disc of covers titled Nineteeneighties. The singer/songwriter will tour clubs around the country this summer in support of the disc, which features Phillips’ stripped-down versions of songs by New Order, The Smiths, The Psychedelic Furs and more.
The former Grant Lee Buffalo frontman will play a record release party June 28 at Largo in Hollywood, Calif., then launch the tour July 25 at Seattle’s Crocodile Cafe.
He’ll move down through California, then head east for two shows at Schubas in Chicago, followed by gigs in Philadelphia, New York City and more. The tour is to wrap August 13 at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass.
The new disc is Phillips’ fourth solo album and follows 2004’s Virginia Creeper. He toured with X‘s John Doe that year and also opened for The Pixies, whose “Wave Of Mutilation” is among the covers featured on Nineteeneighties.
