Berkeley Folk Hub Gets Bigger Home

The 200-capacity Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, Calif., known as a traditional and folk music hub, will be moving from its current location and increasing its seating capacity to about 450. It’s scheduled to open in the new location in June 2008.

Once an auto shop, the new digs will become the club’s third home since it opened in the city in 1968, a venue representative told Pollstar.

The location is 2020 Addison St. in the city’s downtown arts district, just a few blocks from and on the same street as its current site.

Its second floor will be used for educational purposes, including lessons and classes about traditional music.

Upcoming shows at the current Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse include Al Stewart, Laurie Lewis, Mark Erelli, Utah Phillips, and The Lovell Sisters Band.
