Officials Take Over Disney Hall

Los Angeles County officially assumed ownership of the $274 million Walt Disney Concert Hall January 9th.

The Frank Gehry-designed venue, opened in 2003, was under the supervision of the non-profit Walt Disney Concert Hall Inc. while the city and county of Los Angeles struggled during the 1990s with the economy, riots and the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Now largely recovered, the county plans to sublease the hall to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

"Los Angeles was kind of down on itself at that point in time," county supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said. "Disney Hall was the first civic project that got successfully built after that down period in the L.A. economy and the L.A. psyche."
