Brown Arena Debate

James Brown Arena in Augusta, Ga., could face the wrecking ball despite attempts to save the aging venue.

Mayor Deke Copenhaver said the 8,500-capacity building, named for the late Godfather of Soul last August, could be torn down to make room for a new arena that would also bear Brown’s name.

Officials with the August-Richmond County Coliseum Authority, which operates the arena, have discussed the possibility of renovating the facility and promoting events in-house but have come to no decision.

Brown’s final memorial service was held at the arena December 30th.
