Dupri Named Island Urban President
Island Def Jam Music Group named Jermaine Dupri as president of its newly created Island Records Urban Music division February 7th.
The move reunites Dupri with Island Def Jam chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid. The pair worked together previously at Arista Records when Reid ran the label.
"We are very fortunate to have Jermaine in our fold," Reid said. "There’s a strong relationship between us already, which makes this move even better for the team."
This is the third senior management position for Dupri in four years. In 2003 he was tapped to be senior vice president of Arista, and in 2005, he was named president of Virgin Records’ urban division.
Dupri also brings to Island his own label, Atlanta-based So So Def, which has counted Bow Wow and Dem Franchize Boyz among the artists on its roster.
