The band has canceled the remainder of its European tour, which was schedule to run through April 5, but Butler is suffering from a major sinus infection and may face surgery to alleviate it. Seven dates in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium are affected.

“I just had to make the very sad decision to cancel the rest of the European tour… last night in Stockholm I finally pushed my voice and body farther than they are able to go” Butler posted on the band’s Web site.

“I kept yelling at the monitor guy because I didn’t recognise the sound that was coming out of the monitor as my own voice, and it took me until the second song to realise that the sound was coming from me.”

He added that doctors have been advising him to cancel shows for weeks, but he has been trying to push through.

The singer’s brother and bandmate Will Butler, said, “Oh boy oh boy was this the correct decision. That Win is sicker than a brick.”

Arcade Fire’s North American tour dates start April 26 in San Diego and spans into June. Right now, that tour is still on the books.
