De La Hoya Breaks Records
Some analysts claimed the boxing match between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. would mark the end of boxing, that it was the last gasp of a dying sport. Instead, 2.15 million households paid $54.95 each for the pay-per-view fight, generating $120 million in revenue.
That tops the Tyson-Holyfield record of 1.99 million buys.
Mayweather beat De La Hoya on a split decision to win the WBC 154-pound title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas May 5th.
