Lavigne’s ‘Girlfriend’ Grief

Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer of The Rubinoos recently filed a lawsuit against Avril Lavigne claiming the singer and her co-writers swindled one of their tunes for her latest album, The Best Damn Thing.

The suit alleges that Lavigne’s "Girlfriend" is strikingly similar to The Rubinoos’ "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," which was released in 1979.

Lavigne released a statement July 6th arguing that she was "falsely accused of ripping their song off" and the singer maintained that "there is no merit to their claim."

The controversy has generated several compare/contrast videos on Youtube.
