Griffith Park Benefit Efforts Grow
Nederlander Concerts has created a series of concerts and special events at The Greek Theatre to benefit the Griffith Park Recovery Fund, which supports the reforestation efforts needed to restore the park.
The Goo Goo Dolls were the first to offer their assistance, agreeing to reschedule a June show for September 6, when they’ll headline a benefit for the fund.
Aiken, who will perform August 4 at the venue, has donated an array of autographed merchandise, including a limited edition poster, an autographed book, a T-shirt, CDs and more, which will be offered as a package during a silent auction to be held in the Greek Theatre plaza prior to his show. The winner of the auction will also receive hospitality passes to the Greek Theatre’s VIP Deck after the show.
Prior to Tony Bennett’s August 16 show at the Greek, a limited-edition, giclĂ©e art print donated by the singer entitled “Chianti, Italy” will be auctioned off in the venue’s plaza.
Texas trio Los Lonely Boys contribution to the effort is a private acoustic set for 50 fans to be held in the afternoon prior to their August 17 performance. Tickets for this special event will be auctioned through Ticketmaster between August 1 and August 10, with bids starting at $50.00.
Griffith Park, the largest municipal park with an urban wilderness area in the United States, was devastated by a wildfire last May that left more than 800 acres destoryed.
Although the Greek Theatre escaped harm from the fire, Nederlander Concerts COO Alex Hodges told Pollstar helping restore the park is important and something he’s committed to no matter how long it takes.
“Fires are dangerous and fires are costly,” Hodges said. “We’re fortunate that there wasn’t more damage, and we’re very fortunate that there wasn’t any loss of life or injury to the firemen.
“But it’s not just over in a day when the news trucks move away, and the recovery’s not over in a day. The purpose of the fund is reforestation of Griffith Park. It’s really simple, but it’s a big project.”
Hodges added that response from artists has been terrific, and he expects to be able to announce many additional fundraising events for the restoration fund at The Greek in the future.
