Be True To Your School
Los Lobos has signed on to headline a benefit to help raise money to restore the historic auditorium at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, which was destroyed by a fire set by a student in May.
The October 14th event will be held at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles.
Other artists scheduled to appear include Chicano artists Tierra, Little Willie G of Thee Midniters, and El Chicano, Tex-Mex band Little Joe y La Familia and Garfield’s latest musical progeny, Upground.
Tickets are priced from $39.75 to $69.75 and are available through Ticketmaster.
In addition to destroying the auditorium, the fire charred almost all of the portraits of famous graduates that hung on the school’s wall of fame, only sparing a portrait of Los Lobos’ Cesar Rosas.
While stopping short of calling the survival of the portrait a miracle, Rosas took the event as an omen.
“It’s a calling,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “It means we’re on a mission from God to try to help.”
