An $8 million plan to overhaul Gulfport, Miss.’ Jones Park includes an 8,000-seat amphitheatre. The city council approved the concept for the beachfront project in April, according to South Mississippi’s Sun Herald. They hope to turn the park from an empty field to a city centerpiece.
"This will be the work of several years, but every season will see a bit more done and a new layer added," Gulfport’s first lady Laura Warr told the paper.
The Friends of Jones Park committee, a group of business leaders and community activists led by Warr, are working with designers on the project. The project is still in the early stages but work on the drainage, irrigation and utility systems will begin soon, the Sun-Herald said.
