Sheffield To Be MIDEM’s Metropolis

Caroline Reason from London-based Metropolis Music has ensured U.K. talent is strongly represented at next year’s MIDEM in France by arranging for Richard Hawley and Reverend & The Makers to headline the British showcase.

Also in the lineup for the 2,000-capacity Hotel Martinez Ballroom January 28 are Tawiah and New York Fund, with acoustic sets coming from Bailey Tzuke, Jack Savoretti, Beth Rowley, and Karl Morgan.

"I’m really chuffed to be playing Midem. We were in Cannes last summer and saying Cannes would be a great place to play. It’s going to be Sheffield By The Sea," said Hawley as both he and Reverend & The Makers are from the South Yorkshire city.

Hawley’s Coles Corner was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2006.

"Someone call 999, Richard Hawley’s been robbed," said Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, whose debut album won that year’s award.

Bailey Tzuke, daughter of English singer/songwriter Judie Tzuke, has already achieved a level of U.K. chart success, appearing as guest vocalist on The Freemasons’ "Uninvited" single.

British Music at Midem is supported by a clutch of U.K. music industry organizations, including AIM, BPI, The BRIT Awards and the MCPS-PRS Alliance. It also has the backing of U.K. Trade & Investment, a government body that helps U.K. companies succeed in international markets. Metropolis has sourced the talent for the showcase since 2002.

Next year’s MIDEM is at Cannes’ Palais des Festivals January 27-31.
