The annual holiday light show held at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y., has been scrapped because of declining attendance over the last seven years.
Live Nation NYC, which manages the theatre, notified Jones Beach State Park officials in July that it would not be renewing its permit for the show, which ran from the weekend before Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day, according to Newsday.
The event attracted about 70,000 cars to view the more than 150 displays in 2000 but attendance has dropped to about half of that in recent years, the paper said.
Last year Live Nation reduced the fee, moved the show to a new location and added a skating rink and other attractions to boost attendance, to no avail.
Meanwhile, park officials are reportedly discussing taking over the event and renegotiating a deal with Live Nation for the future.
