New For Old Music Venues

The British government has a plan to create new music venues to replace any key ones that are forced to close, according to BBC News.

"We want to do everything we can to support live music," culture secretary James Purnell told the international newswire.

His department reportedly has plans to work with London’s mayor "to see what can be done to ensure key music venues are not closed down in London and, if they are, to explore how suitable replacements can be provided."

The question was raised as London’s Astoria, now operated by LN-Gaiety, comes under threat of demolition to make way for a new cross-London rail link.

At the beginning of the year, the local council agreed Hammersmith Palais will be demolished. Redevelopment plans for Camden could also put the Electric Ballroom under threat.
