Knight Appeals Judge’s Ruling
Rap mogul Suge Knight’s former attorney filed a motion January 2nd to overturn the $130 million judgment awarded to Knight’s former associate Lydia Harris and her imprisoned former husband Michael Harris on the grounds the couple committed fraud to obtain the money.
Dermot Givens, who represented the Death Row Records chief in his federal bankruptcy proceedings, is seeking to have the monetary judgment set aside because of new evidence he contends proves the Harrises lied to the court in 2002 about their stake in the label, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The court filing accuses Lydia Harris of hiding the fact she filed for bankruptcy five years before suing Knight, claiming he had bilked her out of millions. Givens says court papers filed in 1998 show Harris didn’t list Death Row Records as an asset during the bankruptcy proceedings.
Michael Harris, serving time in San Quentin State Prison for drug dealing, previously tried to sue Knight, claiming he’d invested $1.5 million in 1991 to help Death Row get started and is entitled to half of his former wife’s award.
Knight has repeatedly denied that claim, saying Harris was just trying to extort money from him. The case was settled out of court for $300,000.
