3D Wars
The new “U23D” movie is expected to have full distribution February 15h but is already facing stiff competition from – what else – Hannah Montana.
The three-dimensional movie of U2 in concert is already in limited release and giving fans on a budget a way to see a major concert production. Unfortunately, full release was moved a few days forward from February 12th because of a “programming conflict,” which the Los Angeles Times interpreted as a nod to “Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour.”
Although face value of “Hannah Montana” tickets have been priced more affordably than U2 tix, the populace that wants to see Miley Cyrus in concert has been footing extravagant markups on the secondary ticketing market. It’s not wonder, then, that Fandango.com reported more than 1,000 shows had sold out as of January 30th, according to the Times.
Theatres are investing heavily in 3D technology, the paper said. With “Hannah Montana” having an anticipated $27 million debut in 683 specially equipped venues, the show – along with the visually stunning U2 movie – could usher in a substitute to live performance, at least for the limited disposable income of most consumers.
