Emilio Slowly Recovering
Tejano singer Emilio Navaira, known simply as Emilio, has been transferred to a rehabilitation center at Houston’s Memorial Hermann Hospital following a March 23rd tour bus crash in the suburb of Bellaire.
The singer, who was in critical condition for weeks after the crash in which he suffered serious brain injuries, is now talking and eating, and has been able to stand up and write his name, according to hospital officials.
"Although he still has a long way to go in his recovery, this is certainly a major milestone, and it is very encouraging for him and his family," the hospital’s Dr. Alex Valadka said in a statement.
Emilio and his band Rio performed at local club Hallabaloo’s the night before the crash, in which the singer was thrown through the windshield of the bus after crashing into a traffic divider in the early morning hours of March 23rd.
The singer was driving the bus at the time of the crash but was unlicensed to do so, Bellaire police told the Houston Chronicle at the time of the accident.
Authorities await toxicology reports to determine whether alcohol played a factor in the crash, the paper said.
