Remy Ma’s Wedding Escape Plan

Rapper Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison May 13th, days after her weekend jail wedding was called off by corrections officials when the groom, rapper Papoose, showed up with a universal handcuff key.

The 26-year-old rapper, whose real name is Remy Smith, was to be wed at Rikers Island jail in New York. According to the New York Post, guards quickly confiscated the key and Papoose was forced off the island without getting to see his bride-to-be.

Smith’s lawyer denies the key could be used to unlock handcuffs and says the rappers still plan to tie the knot.

Smith, who could have faced up to 25 years in prison, was sentenced for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion. According to the New York Post, she shot her once good friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, in the stomach while in the victim’s car outside of a Manhattan, N.Y., nightclub last summer.

An appeal is planned as Smith says the shooting was an accident.

"I look at it like this: There is a pattern of criminality and a pattern of thumbing their nose at the system that just continues here," Barnes-Joseph lawyer Lauren Raysor told the paper in reaction to the handcuff key incident.

The paper noted that prosecutors had accused Smith of gang assault and witness tampering after Papoose, whose real name is Shamele Mackie, and his crew allegedly beat up the boyfriend of one of the prosecution witnesses at a Bronx nightclub weeks after the shooting. The witness’ boyfriend was left with a fracture in his face and another man suffered a broken jaw.

Charges were never brought against Mackie and a jury acquitted Smith of all charges relating to the incident.
