The Rolling Stones is the latest big-name band to leave EMI. Radiohead exited the label last fall shortly before launching a revolutionary pick-your-price promotion for its latest album, In Rainbows.

The Stones signing with Universal is also a disappointment for Live Nation, which had been trying to sign the band, reports Reuters.

EMI has been going through a transition since it was acquired by private equity company Terra Firma in 2007. Terrra Firma’s top gun, Guy Hands, had personally appealed to the Stones to stay with the label.

But the personal touch evidently wasn’t enough. With Universal, the band will have full control of its catalog going back to the 1970s, according to The Times Of London.

Under the new agreement, Universal will release new albums by the band through its Polydor label and will control all digital and physical rights.

“Universal are forward-thinking, creative and hands-on music people,” the Stones said in a statement. “We really look forward to working with them.”
