Spectrum Names Director Of Closing

Comcast-Spectacor announced August 12 Lou Scheinfeld has been named the director of closure for Philadelphia’s Wachovia Spectrum.

The 19,000-capacity venue is closing at the end of the upcoming Philadelphia Phantoms hockey and Philadelphia Kixx indoor soccer seasons to make way for the Philly Live! entertainment complex.

Scheinfeld, a former president of both the Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers, played a key role in the formation of the Spectrum and Flyers in 1966 as well as the initial naming and marketing of the venue.

"It’s sort of closure for me," Scheinfeld said in a statement. "I was here at the start so why not come back to shut it down."

Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko previously told Pollstar the venue could be razed late spring/early summer 2009 but there is no definitive timeline.
