Girl Talk Parties Hearty

There may be such a thing as too much crowd interaction. Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom learned that the hard way after fans on stage at a Nov. 6 Girl Talk show caused a water pipe to rupture.

Girl Talk – aka Gregg Gillis, who drags and drops music clips on the fly with a laptop – had requested there be no barricade in front of the stage and then during the show, he invited the sold-out crowd to join him and his laptop on stage, according to the Tennessean.

The rowdy crowd’s dance party was a little too much for the stage and a seam in the wood floor gave way, sinking about six inches.

The paper reported that just after midnight the lights were turned on, the music was turned off and it was announced that with the emergency on stage, the night was over.

No fans were reported injured but venue co-owner Todd Ohlhauser, who wasn’t available as of press time, told the Tennessean there was minor damage from a busted sprinkler pipe and some water leakage.

The day after the show, Ohlhauser said the stage and pipe had been repaired, and no events planned for the 1000-capacity club were affected.

He told the paper the damage could have been avoided if Girl Talk had been more responsible in his security demands and if the audience had minded their Ps and Qs. Also, fans shouldn’t expect to see any future DJ shows at the club.

“DJ shows are the bane of Chark [Kinsolving, the venue’s co-owner]’s and mine’s existence,” Ohlhauser told the Tennessean. “We are a rock ‘n’ roll venue and we are going to play rock ’n’ roll shows from here on out.”
