AG Takes On Brown Trustees

The Attorney General’s office of South Carolina has stepped into the ongoing legal tangle over the estate and trust of James Brown.

According to court documents obtained by the Aiken Standard, the office has demanded that court-appointed trustees Adele Pope and Robert Buchanan be removed from the case.

In a court brief, Attorney General Henry McMaster accused the trustees of “continued needless litigation,” and attempting to interfere with the settlement agreement, the Standard reported.

“Despite the passage of almost two years since Mr. Brown’s death and almost one year since the appointment of Pope and Buchanan, little if any business of protecting the estate and legacy of James Brown has been done,” the motion said. “For example, no satisfactory inventory and appraisement has been filed nor was the federal estate tax return based on reliable information.”
