Little Kylie In Big China
“It’s my first time ever here in Beijing and you’ve made me feel so welcome,” the Australian star told the 6,000 fans at the Beijing Workers’ Gymnasium.
She performed in Shanghai and Hong Kong the previous week.
Beijing media refer to the performer as the “pea princess,” a nod to her tiny size, and she is known in Chinese as “Kaili Minuo,” according to Reuters.
During the two-hour show, Minogue treated fans to her biggest hits while changing into more and more dazzling Jean Paul Gaultier costumes.
“I’m very happy today,” Minogue said in broken Chinese, telling the crowd, “Oh Beijing, you’re so wow!”
She stayed away from politics, sticking to her hit songs and avoiding angering fans and the government, as Bjork did earlier this year when she shouted, “Tibet! Tibet!” at a Shanghai concert after performing her song “Declare Independence.”
Minogue has more dates on the books through the end of December, with stops in Taiwan, New Zealand and her native Australia.
The singer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 but was back on the road again after recovering from surgery and treatment.
