Ninety-Foot Hillbillies
“Beverly Hillbillies” star Max Baer Jr. got a nice birthday present: He has a sign for his casino.
Baer, who played Jethro on the famous ’60s television show, has been developing a Beverly Hillbillies Mansion & Casino just south of Carson City, Nev. However, until now, he couldn’t get Douglas County commissioners to grant a variance for the sign out front.
Baer proposed two different signs that were rejected. His latest proposal called for a return to the original oil derrick design but with two sign faces instead of three.
Commissioners voted 4-1 to allow a sign height of 90 feet; county code allows a maximum of 30 feet.
He originally requested a 200-foot oil derrick and a tulip-shaped sign reminiscent of the “Beverly Hillbillies” street signs.
