Christian Songwriters Give Back

Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman and Chris Tomlin are just three of a dozen Christian songwriters who have contributed songs to CompassionArt: Creating Freedom from Poverty, a new charity album that will benefit the poor in the U.S. and abroad.

Smith and the other artists attended a retreat in Scotland earlier this year, hoping to write a dozen or so songs they could donate to charity, but they ended up writing 22.

While 14 of the songs will be included on CompassionArt, which is due Jan. 27, six are currently available for downloading here:  They can be downloaded for free, but a donation is being requested. The remaining eight songs will be released in the future.

Other artists involved in the project include Amy Grant, CeCe Winans, Martin Smith, , Kirk Franklin, tobyMac and Darlene Zschech.

All of the songs have been donated by the artists, with any money raised going to organizations that benefit the poor around the world.  A companion book, “The Art of Compassion,” will be released in tandem with the album.
