Rafferty has reportedly been battling alcoholism and liver failure. In August he was kicked out of a swank London hotel after leaving his suite unusable and checked into St. Thomas Hospital for liver failure treatment, according to the Daily Mail.

Within days he left the hospital, abandoning his belongings. Rafferty, who reportedly earns £80,000 ($116,135) a year off of his ’70s hit “Baker Street” alone, had been living from a suitcase and staying in various upscale hotels, according to the Mail. He never toured much, and his career subsequently faded.

Rafferty helped form Stealers Wheel in Paisley, Renfrewshire, in 1972, and is the voice of its main hit, “Stuck In the Middle.” Tony Williams, who formed the band with Rafferty, told the Mail the singer’s behavior in the London hotel suggested he was on a “suicide trip.” Williams tried to locate Rafferty after the 61-year-old left the hospital, then called the police.

“It’s absolutely tragic,” Williams told the paper. “If he has liver failure, he obviously needs someone to look after him. If he is still alive, somebody must be caring for him.”

Some say he may have been kidnapped while others say he may be living abroad. A waiter told the Mail he served Rafferty at a London restaurant days after the singer left the hospital and a blogger claims Rafferty is staying at a U.K. bed and breakfast.
