The Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger rushed into the studio and recorded new vocals for a remix of Rahman’s award-winning song “Jai Ho,” according to MTV.com.

In a move worthy of any beauty pageant contestant, Scherzinger waxed rhapsodic about the recording, stopping just short of asking for world peace.

“It’s an honor to be able to collaborate with A.R. Rahman and be a part of the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ project in any way,” Scherzinger said in a statement. “The movie, the story and the music [were] a gift and very spiritually uplifting for me. … I can only hope and pray ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ and my version of ‘Jai Ho’ (‘You Are My Destiny’) touches and connects people all around the world.”

Anyone got a tissue?

The track went up less than 24 hours after the Academy Awards ceremony on DesiHits.com, a South Asian culture and lifestyle site. Actually, calling it a remix is kind of a stretch.

“With the song’s original frantic beats and uplifting percussion in place, Scherzinger’s version replaces the original tune’s Hindi words with English lyrics, including the chorus, ‘You are the reason that I breathe/ You are the reason that I still believe/ You are my destiny/ Jai ho.’”

So basically what we’re saying here is Scherzinger recorded her own version of a song that already had the potential to be a hit on its own merits? How Pat Boone.

Speaking of success, Pollstar’s Phil Brasor reports that although “Slumdog” isn’t exactly doing blockbuster business in India, the film’s soundtrack is selling better than expected.

“Mukash Desai, the CEO of the album’s local label T-Series, told the [Business Standard of India] the album had already been a ‘big hit’ in terms of FM radio airplay and iTunes downloads. He said he expects a 40 to 45 percent increase in local sales for the physical CD as the movie gains more word-of-mouth attention.”

Brasor adds, “Other music industry sources say that sales could top 100,000 copies per week” and points out Rahman’s albums routinely break the 1 million sales mark in India.

So who exactly is A.R. Rahman? The BBC recently posted this interesting and enlightening profile of the man they call “India’s – and Bollywood’s – first truly successful cross-over music director.”
