Outside Lands Fest Dates Announced
The fest’s Web site promises 2009 will feature “more music with a longer Friday, more local restaurants, more wine, more eco-initiatives, and more freaks!”
A lineup has not been announced yet. Last year’s headliners included Radiohead, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Jack Johnson. The three-day fest also featured Beck, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, Wilco, Primus, Cake, Widespread Panic, Broken Social Scene, The Black Keys and Rodrigo Y Gabriela along with more than 50 additional artists.
The debut fest was historical in that Radiohead was the first artist to ever play at night in Golden Gate Park, according to the fest’s Web site.
Another Planet Entertainment will once again promote the festival. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the deal signed between the Bay Area promotion company and San Francisco a few weeks ago will rake in about $1.5 million for the city Recreation and Park Department.
In a recent article, the Chronicle referred to the fest as a “controversial concert” and said some locals opposed bringing back the event for a second year because of issues including noise and traffic. It noted that other residents recognized that the festival brought in a big wad of cash for the parks department.
One compromise made between neighbors and festival organizers was that the Sunday night show August 30 is required to end at 7:30 p.m.
The Outside Lands Web site advises patrons to check back for ticket info.
Here’s what some locals had to say about the second annual fest, according to comments on the Chronicle’s Web site:
Rock festivals in the park are to San Francisco what apple pie is to America. If you ain’t down, yr livin’ in the wrong city.

This is excellent news! Let’s all clean up our own trash, and pick up one piece that isn’t yours, either. We’ve lost Halloween and Bay to Breakers — events that helped make San Francisco the destination city it is, so let’s work hard to keep this event neighborhood-friendly!

Dave Matthews Band will be playing Saturday night…. I’ll put money on it.

the neighbors chose to live near a park, and there have been concerts at ggpark for decades. they can’t move in and then whine about the noise, they knew what they were getting themselves into.
