Every track on the AMF is handpicked by “established audio curators.” Aside from clearing the songs for legal downloading, the tracks are available for free for podcasts as well as radio and video productions.

While the tracks are free, the AMF does provide a mechanism for tipping the artists and bands for their work.

Some of the artists and bands with tracks on the AMF include Deerhoof, Vivian Girls, Bob Wiseman, The Sea & Cake, and Glass Candy.

In addition to WFMU, other curators of the Free Music archive include radio stations KEXP (Seattle) and KBOO (Portland, Oregon). Other curators include Webcaster DubLab and online collective CASH Music.

An interesting notation on the site is one that reads, “We thank Eliot Spitzer and the New York State Music Fund for making this site possible.”

Of course, Spitzer is the former New York State governor who had to resign his office when it was discovered he was a regular customer of expensive call girls.

Although users are encouraged to register, signing up for the Archive is not required. For more information, please visit the Free Music Archive by clicking here.
