Womex Roots In West

Specialist music can learn from the self-destruction of the rest of the industry, according to Glastonbury Festival booker Martin Elbourne.

He’ll explain how at a new, one-day conference (April 22) at Bristol Colston Hall, organised by WOMEX and Roots South West.

The conference is called Live And Direct, the same as the ill-fated gathering that Music Week ran in London in 2007.

It will examine the world, folk and roots industry with a particular focus on live music. Speakers from the festival industry, promoters, agents, musicians and managers will be included.

Apart from Elbourne’s keynote speech, WOMEX general director Gerald Seligman will discuss whether the industry crisis has hit the live scene. Mark Ringwood from Roots Around The World will host a session on visa issues and Guy Morley of the Big Chill and Brighton Festival will chair a discussion on programming.

The lunchtime and evening showcases include performances from Jackie Oates, Colores De Mi Tierra, and The Carravick Sisters.
