Jane’s Addiction Fighting Up A Storm
“I’m not going to tell you it’s been all smooches and hugs. But it shouldn’t be because that would be a bore,” Farrell told Reuters during last weekend’s Coachella music festival.
“If my band didn’t have issues, if they didn’t throw tantrums, I would think I was with a bunch of suckers. As long as they can handle it, I can handle it. After all we’re just delivering music that people love, so how bad can it be? It could be worse. We could be drafted.”
Jane’s Addiction’s upcoming tour with Nine Inch Nails kicks off May 8 at Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Fla., with dates through June 12’s show at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Charlotte, N.C.
Although Farrell has teamed up with guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Steven Perkins on a number of occasions since the band’s 1991 breakup, this is the first time in 18 years the original lineup is all back together as bassist Eric Avery will be along for the fun.
Because things haven’t been all bunnies and sunshine between Farrell and Avery, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who is producing new songs for Jane’s Addiction, tried to help the guys work out their differences.
Farrell said Reznor “did his best to be both producer and psychologist. … I wish honestly he would’ve produced a little more, but he was a little gun shy after seeing us explode on each other in the studio. He became the referee for a day and after that day I think he was done.”
Farrell added that he talked to Avery “man-to-man,” explaining that “I’m overjoyed that we’re working together. I don’t care that we butt heads as long as when we hit the stage we blast on people.”
The band is working on new music and plans to treat fans to free singles on its Web site. The first tune will be called “Embrace the Darkness.”
Jane’s Addiction will be performing at a number of upcoming festivals including Sasquatch! Music Festival in Quincy, Wash., May 24, T In The Park in Kinross, U.K., July 11, Oxegen in Naas, Ireland, July 12 and Lollapalooza in Chicago Aug.7-9, which is organized by Farrell.
