Japan Pop Star Apologizes For Acting Stupid
Make an apology, of course.
Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, a 34-year-old member of the Japanese pop group SMAP was arrested by police early Thursday morning for being two-sheets-to-the-wind and stark naked in a Tokyo park.
According to media reports, Kusanagi, wearing nothing but his b-day suit, was sitting on the grass when he was arrested, and had no idea how he ended up in the park, or what induced him to doff his duds. Although the 10-plus glasses of rice wine and beer he reportedly consumed prior to his arrest probably had something to do with his grin-and-bare-it situation.
The arrest was such big news in Japan that some of the country’s cabinet ministers were commenting on it. Furthermore, Toyota and other companies canceled commercials starring the popster.
But Kusanagi has more than just lost endorsements and public humiliation to worry about. A public indecency conviction in Tokyo could put the singer in prison for up to six months and cost him as much as 300,000 yen, which works out to about $3,060 U.S, although police have yet to charge him for his little lost weekday moment.
You can probably guess what this is leading up to. That’s right. The public apology. On Friday Kusanagi said he was sorry.
“I deeply apologize to fans and fellow SMAP members for causing so much trouble and worry,” Kusanagi said.
