Insiders have been telling major news outlets that Phil Anschutz is about to buy conservative news mag Weekly Standard from Rupert Murdoch, who is probably focusing most of his attention on his newest purchase, the Wall Street Journal.

Staff at the Weekly Standard, edited by William Kristol and Fred Barnes, have already met to discuss the sale and its impact, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Anschutz already publishes the Examiner newspaper in Washington and San Francisco, as well as runs Walden Media.

Word has it that Anschutz, who has supported conservative causes, wants a voice in Washington public affairs, sources told U.S. News.

An AEG spokesman had no comment on the matter.
